​In 2022, my eighth grade year, I flew to the DR for a service project to learn about the effects of ocean acidification and promote growth in deteriorating coral reefs. I had a truly transformative trip and left the country feeling more secure about my contributions to the environment as well as my self image and state of being. I am eager to return to the Dominican Republic and engage in Watkinson’s mission to build houses, schools and other public facilities, manage medical clinics, and teach English to and form bonds with students like myself. During March of 2023, I also traveled to Puerto Rico where I learned extensively about its unique and vibrant culture. I believe that traveling to different countries will not only expand my knowledge of different places, but is essential in furthering my cultural awareness.
