THE SPREAD OF MISINFORMATIMATION THROUGH CELEBRITY ENDORSEMENT

For my 11th grade Global Studies Project I explored the perspectives of specific celebrities who have openly expressed their opinions regarding various social issues (poverty, environmental concerns, warfare, foreign affairs, etc.). I have specifically researched the authencity statements and actions made on behalf of these issues and the impact it has on the greater population.

ARTIST STATEMENT

​My overarching topic for this project was the spread of misinformation from celebrities, pop culture, and various internet personalities. There has been an uproar in celebrity influence in recent years across all topics from international warfare and environmental concerns to presidential elections and voters’ rights. With every controversial tweet and provocative social media post we can see just how easily these individuals’ success and popularity can be exploited to sway public opinion in support of one cause or another. I tried to best portray this widespread issue in the form of a multi-media political art piece that shows how a massive problem such as warfare and mass genocide could be overshadowed the opinions of those in power. The background of the painting depicts rows of burning buildings forcing countless families to take refuge in the street below. The buildings themselves are made of various newspaper columns that describe the state of Gaza after the peak of war and provide context for the scene below. Towards the middle of the piece there is a long winding road of civilians with non-descript faces, as they are portrayed in the media, desperately trying to escape into the horizon. Slightly further down from the monochromatic crowd, there is an abrupt burst of color in the bottom left corner that depicts a celebrity or reporter of some sort expressing their thoughts on the scene below...
